"The Artist's Garden" at Giverny, painted in 1900 by Claude Monet, (1840-1926) was one of twelve core paintings of his garden, inspiring not only him but his friends both before and after his death in 1926. Even while untended and overgrown between 1926 and their restoration in the late 1980s, these gardens continued to cast their spell over visiting artists. Eliminating black and gray from his palette, he processed color like a prism, breaking it down into individual components, often painting a series of the exact same view under different light and weather conditions. His study of the fleeting effects of light, became a forerunner of 20th century modernism.
