Claude Monet (1849-1926), painted his wife, Camille Doncieux a teenage model, (he was 7 years her senior), more than thirty times, while living in poverty and moving from town to town escaping from their creditors.
She was Claude's first wife who gave him two sons, Jean and Michel. She died shortly after giving birth to their second son in 1879. She modeled for her husband on several occasions, including for the painting 'The Woman in the Green Dress', which received critical acclaim at the Paris salon and earned him 800 francs when sold. In addition to being Monet's favourite model, she also modelled for Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Édouard Manet.
