Reginald Franklin Selfe (1888-1960)
Reginald Selfe was born in England and raised in Guildford, Surrey and was successful early on having earned himself a membership in the British Watercolour Society. He was 26 years old when the First World War began and that may explain his need for tranquility, as found in his works. He came to Canada in 1924 with friends and moved into Tavistock, Ontario, where he created a private and sometimes solitary life for himself for the next 36 years, moving back to Guildford to be with his sisters in 1960. There are stories where neighbors would see him leaving on his bicycle with paints and easel and not be seen until several days later. He loved exploring the Tavistock area, staying at Inns or camping out for a couple of days, finishing off a painting before coming home again. He also loved the Elora Gorge and the Muskoka areas as did so many other painters before him and it was there he gave lessons for several years to Boy Scout troops that came to the area.
Being prolific his paintings can be grouped into themes. His most successful themes were the Canadian winter scenes; other recurring themes include urban England, thatched cottages and English villages. His English paintings remind me of Thomas Kinkade, years before Kinkade created his signature works.
Reginald Franklin Selfe is a listed Canadian artist and has a home in the National Gallery in Ottawa. His works are selling in the U.S. and Europe and oddly very well in the Philippines where one of his winter works are listed for $1899.00 CAD.
This thatched cottage is an image he revisited several times, sometimes painting the exact same spot and other times from an opposite view. There's a touch of homesickness revealed here, as not too long afterwards these paintings were created, he moved back to his childhood home.
