Description

George A. Wakeling a landscape painter from Quebec living in the mid-20th century, who haunted the Laurentian Mountains all his life and who painted well known white water areas around the Ontario and Quebec borders.

This painting was inspired from an original poem by Archibald Lampman (1861 - 1899) "Morning On The Lievre", taken from the last scene:

Softly as a cloud we go, Sky above and sky below, Down the river; and the dip Of the paddles scarcely breaks, With the little silvery drip Of the water as it shakes From the blades, the crystal deep Of the silence of the morn, Of the forest yet asleep; And the river reaches borne (the 'reaches' of the river) ed. In a mirror, purple gray, Sheer away To the misty line of light, Where the forest and the stream In the shadow meet and plight, Like a dream. ......................................................................................................

Cascading autumn leaves, a labyrinth of trees and branches looking onto a reflecting lake of colors and beyond to those golden hills.

This Lievre River is an old logging river so for the most part the bigger rocks have been removed leaving sizable clear channels for white water canoeists; the river eventually flows into the Ottawa River west of Tremblant.

Original vintage frame and painting in good condition, but there is a 'ding' on the right side of the frame, hardly noticeable. Frame and painting ready to hang.
