George Alig, born 1933 is known for his dramatic watercolors of landscapes and buildings. He was a native of Switzerland where he grew up on a farm in the Alps. He began painting at the age of 17, snatching precious moments from his chores to study, and with little encouragement from family made painting into a life's work, in spite of the mindset where even the best artists were not taken seriously.
In 1967 he settled in Calgary and is now a listed Canadian artist, and as a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists participated in many exhibitions. His works are with the University of Calgary Library.
This stunning original work, looking unlike any other painting of the genre, captures winter's descent into the valley. The lake water has already iced over while a cold mountain mist settles in for a lengthy stay.
