Description
Circa 1910, this is an antique Arts & Crafts bookcase made by Danner Manufacturing Co., founded in Canton, Ohio. The wood grain is a combination of black Cherry and Curly Cherry construction with two cases each having sliding glass doors that move left to right. “Curly” cherry lumber, a variation of traditional cherry lumber, possesses a distinctive grain pattern known as "curly" or "figured" grain. This unique feature adds depth and visual interest to the wood, making it highly sought after for premium woodworking projects.
Not all wood grain in this bookcase is “curly” cherry especially on the end panels, with the remainder of the wood grain being Black Cherry….”Black” refers to the fine grain patterns and not the overall colour of the wood. Black cherry wood is highly valued for its smooth, straight grain and reliable strength, making it a top choice for fine furniture.
The bottom glass door section opens to adjustable interior shelves and the bottom base is complete with a drawer. The top glass door section has two sliding windows (left to right) with decorative lead glass windows. The diamond centre glass sections have bevelled glass. There are no breaks or cracks in any of the glass.
Signed "Danner" this cherry bookcase is from about 1900 to 1910. The original finish is very well preserved with just enough wear for a little antique character. Cleaned, colour touched up and sealed professionally with lacquer, in order to maintain the warm patina characteristic of its age. Size is 38" wide, 12” deep (top and sections) to 14" deep (the base) , and overall is 49 1/2” tall.
Danner is a well known American antique furniture manufacturer, famous for its stacking barrister bookcases, although they normally feature plain glass doors, not leaded windows. With the lead windows in this bookcase, it is a less common custom made piece from the turn of the century.
