The only difference between the two is the exterior finish (the F was produced in greater quantities with a dark grey finish to match the Pentax SF series cameras and the FA was produced with a black finish to match the Pentax PZ & Z series cameras). The SMC Pentax F 50mm 1.7 is one of Pentax's best lens ...... it's even better than the Pentax FA 43mm 1.9 Ltd. that sells for over $500 used and it's much better than the Pentax FA 50mm 1.4 that sells for around $450 at Henry's or Gosselin Photo (check all the reviews for yourself for the 3 lenses at pentaxforums.com ). The SMC Pentax F 50mm 1.7 is also much better than the DA 50mm 1.8 . The mostly plastic DA 50mm 1.8 is not bad, but it's not a "full frame" lens. The DA 50mm is usable only with DSLRS with crop APS-C sensors, it's soft at f1.8 and it has to be stopped down to at least f2.8 or f4 to get sharp pictures. The mostly metal SMC Pentax F 50mm 1.7 (like the FA 1.7 & FA 1.4) is sharp even at f1.7

My "SMC version, with the red lettering on the lens" has the same high rating, quality and resolution as the F 35-70mm. If you want my SMCP F 28-80, I can sell it for $110 and keep the 35-70mm.
