Description

My Mitsubishi Legnum project is almost finished so it’s time to put her up for sale to find her a forever home (or at least someone to enjoy this nifty wagon!) When I first found this Mitsubishi it had some fairly minor (purely cosmetic) damage to the front end—the grill, hood and front bumper were all damaged, and the headlights were pushed back; breaking one tab off each (so they were easily repaired). The previous owner was having some difficulty locating the various parts required to repair it; and instead he opted to sell it as it was. After inspecting the car I found it was in phenomenal condition; because with 118,000km mechanically it was up to date on all major services; including water pump and all timing components) the interior was dirty; but everything looked like it would just take a good deep cleaning (with shampoo) to bring it back to life. When I first got the Legnum home we stripped off the damaged components; but because the damage on the aftermarket Freeway Dolphin bumper was fairly superficial (broken lower bar and scrapes/holes from the car being low) we sent it in to be completely reconditioned; and when it came back it was actually stronger than new (because we reinforced the lower lip with fibreglass). This car was extremely hard to find parts for; I usually have no problems sourcing parts out of Japan (as I’ve been importing cars and rare bits from there for almost 22 years) but this time I came up dry at all my honey holes. Eventually I ended up finding a website that had a massive offering of Mitsubishi Legnum parts; the only problem is that they’re in Russia! I had huge reservations about trying to do business out of there (considering the war and current political climate) but really I had no other option. Long story short—I ended up finding a broker, and then used him to negotiate with the various companies I found so everything could be shipped to his warehouse in Russia—then he would repackage everything together from the various vendors and forwarded it to us here in Canada almost 8,000km away. Instead of replacing the damaged grill with a factory one I picked out a Vogue aftermarket grill, then instead of re-using the factory headlights I found a ultra rare pair of special edition Cibie factory headlights. The original hood was bent and instead of mucking around trying to fix it I matched the Vogue grill with a Vogue “Monster” hood (has two aggressive vents in the middle, and a ram air vent; off to one side) then to finish off the aggressive look I managed to find some rare Masa vented fenders. With all the upgrades up front I figured I might as well finish off the kit—so I ordered a Freeway Dolphin wing for the rear, then G-Square side skirts and rear lip. As I already had a significant order coming I got my broker to find some upgraded X-braces (one for the front, and one chassis stiffening bar for inside the rear) plus a few other small bits and pieces I needed to fully restore this Legnum. I now had almost a month to wait as everything was first shipped within Russia; then from my broker it made a trip over to Istanbul (before skipping across the pond to Canada) so I pulled everything off the car that wasn’t damaged; but was getting replaced with rare aftermarket bits. Once stripped, the interior was cleaned, then new custom embroidered carpets (yellow Mitsubishi symbol and custom yellow piping front and rear) were fitted. I was pleasantly surprised when parts started arriving early; so everything was meticulously prepped for paint. Then after everything was coated in a perfectly matching yellow paint and diamond clear coat the car was finally re-assembled, and it’s aggressive face took shape! The problem we faced at this point (currently) is I’m waiting on the rear lip to arrive as it’s been caught in customs since the 10th. The skirts arrived late last week so this week they will be prepped and painted… but the rear lip is still a unknown. This is a fantastic vehicle; very rare, and in my opinion completely underrated. It’s a 6 cylinder twin turbo; matched up with an all-wheel drive system that includes Active Yaw Control—a feature usually only found in the high end Mitsubishi Lancer (that was Evolution spec). Since the car is sitting on the hoist (as we wait for the lip) I decided to install some upgrades—a full stainless steel P-Pros Equal length down pipe setup; paired with the stainless steel midsection, plus the cat pipe and connections. To properly exploit the better airflow in the exhaust I sourced a Mines ECU and had it custom mapped for the modifications and altitudes etc (for Canada so the car will still run worry-free). Another custom thing we tackled while waiting was custom lighting, I got custom halo rings for the Cibie headlights, plus some custom 4” halo fog lights, and a custom built set of 7” Transformers (Autobot) headlights with custom metal cross hatch grills. The car is 90% complete; but the body panels we painted need to be cut and polished (that will happen after the skirts and rear lip are painted so everything can be done at once) then she’ll get a oil change (as everything else is up to date) and I’ll be selling it. I don’t expect the completion to take more than a week, that’s why I’m listing it for sale now, because I know a right hand drive, twin turbo wagon isn’t for everyone, and it might take time to find the right buyer to truly appreciate this Japanese gem. I do have a fairly good stockpile of parts for it, plus a Rolodex of connections to acquire almost anything you need for a Mitsubishi Legnum, Nissan Stagea, Nissan Pulsar GTiR, Nissan Terrano, Nissan Skyline, Nissan 300ZX or Honda Prelude (and parts for most those vehicles) so if you have a similar project and need anything drop me a line.
