A visually stunning story of the rise and fall of colonialism through the fate of one officer.
The film itself tells the story of late 19th century French Military North African Colonialism, through the eyes of one dedicated officer. It shows the deceit, corruption, favouritism, and prejudice often behind the actions of empire building, and also shows the simple mind-numbing boredom frequently experienced by those whose duty it was to keep the flag flying, the `cafard` as the French called it. Finally it shows the ultimate fate of Colonialism, and those who were involved in it, for good or bad.
