This year many parents are choosing to keep their children at home instead of allowing them to go trick or treating for Halloween because they are concerned about Covid 19. Some neighborhoods in London have sent letters to residents, asking them not to offer treats. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has also recommended canceling trick or treating. So what is a parent to do, when children have been dreaming of Halloween costumes and treats for weeks now? One option is to enter the free Children's Halloween Costume Contest at Forest City Surplus on Dundas St. The costume contest has been an annual tradition at Forest City Surplus since 2014, offering $400 in prizes in adult and child categories. Winning costumes from previous years can be viewed at This year, the contest is just for children ages 1-12. First, parents bring in their kids to be photographed at a safe distance, and fill out an entry form. Winners are selected by one half votes on social media and one half judging by Forest City Surplus staff, similar to the systems on the TV shows Canadian Idol and American Idol. Home-made and original costumes are encouraged and will be given preference in the judging by Forest City Surplus. In addition, voting by family, friends, neighbors, etc. is encouraged for everyone. Each social media voter is allowed three votes for prize winners. The prizes are gift certificates: $50 for first prize, $30 for second prize, and $20 for third prize. However, in this contest, ALL entrants will receive a prize. Once the winners are announced, all other entrants may come in and choose between a bag of Jelly Belly gourmet jelly beans, a bag of Nature's Bounty snacks, a military glider toy, or a growing pet egg toy. There is nothing to lose, and lots of fun to gain, by dressing up and heading down to enter.
