The Yankee soldiers were overtaking the plantations, Confederate cities were ransacked, Atlanta was burning, people were dying, and the southern culture was ending. Scarlette O’Hara’s life must change to survive. Southern Belles lost privileges, entered poverty and survival meant labour. Love would have to wait to survive. Forced into this new life Scarlette tackled the new life aggressively and successfully using the qualities she had admired but which her society decided she should hide – boldness, determination, creation, leadership - marry for money and work hard. In the process she would have 4 husbands and few dead children. In the end she realized that all this success was not the happiness she struggled for, it was the love of her last husband that she wanted and her last words were to get him back.

Hagar at 90 is dying in a nursing home and rethinks her past, the pain and suffering she felt, running away, marriage and love and sex, children dying, powering through life stubbornly believing her view was right, fighting for rights and advantages, pain, missing love –unable to accept, feel and even recognize love. There was love she realized now. She died as she learned that love was what she wanted. The rest wasn’t.
Condition:
All the books are readable. The first four are in very good condition – clean, free of marks, fully bound, no damage, folded pages, clear printing, full covers, The fifth (stone angel) has a very worn cover and some writing on the front inside cover plus the first leaf and underlining on a few pages– otherwise it would be in good condition, tightly bound, all pages intact and clear for easy reading.
