The general consensus is that the EJ is about the closest you will get to a custom shop and for a lot less money. The guitar stands out due to its impressive attention to detail, resulting in a resonant and well-made instrument.
The extra little features on the EJ, such as its lighter body weight, unique rounting that leaves the most wood exposed, a bridge with shallow string cavities and no paint between the block and bridge plate, a unique neck angle that does away with the need for a string tree, and its quartersawn maple neck, all work together to produce the best tone possible.
The EJ pickups feature a 50s-type neck, a 60s style middle pickup, and a 50's 50-style wired hotter to nearly 7K in the bridge.
