At JAM (2005) Enterprises, we sell the Accustar AT-100 long-term alpha track detector at an affordable and comparable price for DIY testing ($49.95 + HST + discounted Canada Post Expedited shipping to you - $12.00 - $14.00 (if needed); Canada Post fuel surcharge and HST is included in the shipping charge. Canada Post charges the higher price for shipping to small towns with a single post office (ex N0_ xxx postal codes). The $49.95 price INCLUDES lab analysis by Accustar in Massachusetts, Canada Post pre-paid Airmail Small Packet shipping of the exposed detector to the lab in Massachusetts, customs declaration and report of results. No extra fees for faster analysis or shipping as with some of the big-box store products. Results are usually available in 2-3 weeks. I usually get a copy of the test results as well as you, so that I can help you (email or phone) with any recommendations or interpretation. Note that my detector comes with a postage pre-paid mailer NOT just a pre-addressed mailer where you pay extra for the postage. This is common on the Internet with this Accustar detector. Don't be fooled!
Please note that shipping of the detector to you is EXTRA and at my cost unless you can pick it up from me (north end). This is approximately $12.00-$14.00 (higher fee applies to small towns with one post office) for Canada Post Expedited Parcel shipping and should get the detector to you within 1-2 days. Please note that nearly all detectors sold via Internet do NOT include the shipping charges to you. Included in the shipping cost is the Canada Post basic rate, Canada Post extra fuel surcharge charge and HST.
Why should I choose the Accustar AT-100 long term test kit ?
This detector is the NUMBER ONE rated long-term detector in North America by Consumer Reports 2014, 2015 and 2016. It is used by both professionals and consumers alike. Unlike some of the big-box kits or Internet, there are NO EXTRA FEES for faster processing or lab analysis since the cost of lab analysis is included in the affordable price. As with some big-box store or Internet kits, SHIPPING of the exposed detector to the lab is INCLUDED. The included pre-paid Accustar shipping via Canada Post usually takes about 4-5 days which is quite acceptable for long-term kits. Frequent complaints for the big-box store kits centre on the inordinately long time for shipping to the US and/or slow down with Customs which can invalidate the test results but this usually occurs with short-term test kits. This occurs because many kit manufacturers that include shipping back to the lab, choose the least expensive (read longest) method to get the exposed detector back to the lab. Some detectors that do include shipping usually are based in the US and as such the included mailers are only good when mailed from the US not Canada. The ones that do include Canadian mailing chose regular parcel shipping to Vaughn, ON; unless you time the placement of the detectors correctly as well as the shipping, you may find that the lab may not have received them in time to test !! All these detectors are then re-shipped and analyzed in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Detectors (especially short-term ones) must be returned quickly (within a few days) for analysis. That is why I buy and include Canada Post pre-paid mailers from Accustar Canada for your convenience and cost-savings. With some big-box store or Internet kits, especially short-term, the NECESSARY express or courier shipping can cost as much as $73.04 (Canada Post Priority). Timing is everything !!
Purchasing this product avoids some of the pitfalls and limitations that are usually inherent in the some of the big box store or Internet products. Read the store customer reviews on these products! Many were disappointed after the kit purchase ! For limitations (of which there are several) for some of the big-box store kits, please see my website - "Do-It-Yourself Testing" section.
Cash, cheque [JAM (2005) Enterprises] are preferable, however I now accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and Interact email money transfer through the major banks. If you order directly from my website, PayPal is normally used for payment.
When purchasing, please send me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) so that I can confirm your purchase and mailing address.
Why is detecting radon important?
Radon gas and its radioactive decay products are the number two cause of LUNG CANCER in North America, superseded only by smoking. These radon decay products (RDP) actually attach to dust, smoke, pet dander, aerosols, etc. that we ALL BREATHE IN! It is these radioactive particles that initiate the cancer process. With high radon gas levels and if you or someone in your house are smokers, or exposed to second hand smoke (children, pets), the risk of getting and dying from radon-induced lung cancer has just increased by 900%. There is a significant synergistic effect between high levels and smoking! Great reason to quit! Good reason to test! Since radon comes from the soil, it is in every house and business that is built upon soil. No one is exempt! You will have it; it is the level that is important to know! YOU WILL NEVER KNOW THAT YOU HAVE IT OR WHAT THE LEVEL IS WITHOUT TESTING! Radon gas is colourless, odourless and tasteless. You cannot detect radon gas with your senses! You cannot taste it, see it or smell it.There are no symptoms associated with radon - no headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, etc. that might indicate you have a problem. The only indication might be years later, you might develop a cough that will not go away and the physician and testing indicates that you have advanced stage lung cancer. (Read the stories on my website or the CANSAR.org web site - real people, real stories, real cancer!)
But what about your BELOVED PETS (I have two cats). They breathe the same air as you do. Unfortunately, they are exposed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They do not have to go to work, or get groceries, or the luxury of getting out of the house for extended periods of time. They are exposed for prolonged periods and face the same lung cancer risks that you face. What is protecting them - again a simple test.
Order a long-term test kit today so that you will have it in place for the fall-winter-spring months. It is important that DIY testing is carried out for at least 3 months (preferably longer) during the fall-winter-spring months when "closed house" conditions are prevalent. This gives the most accurate levels since radon gas levels are highest during these months, minimizes the daily radon gas fluctuations, can be used for estimating yearly exposure levels (6 months or longer test period) and must be used for mitigation decisions.
