This is an original Red Glass Illuminated Exit Sign Light, manufactured by Kopp Glass Inc. out of Pittsburgh.
The glass used in the manufacture of this exit light is classified as "selenium red" glass. This glass became the standard for railroad signal lighting and due to its properties, it has and is being widely used in harsh and dangerous environments.
The unique thing about this particular exit light is that it still sports its original ceiling mount sconce, along with its two screws to hold the glass in place. During salvage operations, crews don't remove the sconce, making it difficult to reuse. This exit light came from an old torn-down commercial building in the U.S.A.
Clients use these in their office or their basement theatre room at home. Use a dimmer to add to the low-light effect. The light bulb shining through the red glass provides for an incredible atmosphere, making your home theatre room or office a great place to relax under this unique one-of-a-kind glass exit light sign.
This exit light was manufactured during the Industrial Period, circa 1955 to 1965.
Background information about Kopp's specialist glass making facilities and products.
Kopp Glass was founded in 1926 from the reorganization of the Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass and Glass Company. The strength and core competency of the original company was the ability to develop and mold beautiful glass lamps and tableware in a wide range of colors. Those same core competencies are among the competencies that make Kopp the unquestionable leader in its field today.
The company expanded into the industrial and technical glass market in its early years through the development of "selenium red" glass. This glass became the standard for railroad signal lighting and the rest is history.
Through the years, Kopp Glass has continued to make important contributions in the aerospace, industrial, scientific, transportation, and other markets. In the latter part of the 20th century, their glass scientists developed monolithic night vision (NVIS) compatible filters used in many of the world's military aircraft for night operations. These filters allow pilots to operate with night vision goggles without being blinded by the instrumentation lighting.
In the early 1980's, Kopp Glass entered the filter glass business. This product line continues to be an important and strategic part of the company today. Kopp continues to add new products to the line and to improve product quality to meet the needs of their customers.
As markets and products have changed over the years, so has Kopp. Today their products can be found all over the world. They continue to upgrade their facility and manufacturing capability and to develop their technical expertise. Every day they use their expertise to develop innovative and unique solutions for their customers that create value and differentiate their products.
