VERY UNIQUE VINTAGE TUBES! MOST APPLICATIONS THE 12BZ7 WILL DIRECTLY REPLACE THE 12AX7 ECC83 OR WILL REPLACE THE 12BH7A (SIMULIR SPECS) THESE TUBES ARE NOS UNUSED AND QUITE RARE! The main difference between 12AX7's and 12BZ7's is the 12BZ7 is generally more "heavy duty" than a 12AX7. They sound more punchy...HUGE honkin' curved black plates. They have the same amp factor, but something having to do with trans-conductance difference translates into upwards of 25% more gain. In a guitar amp (which commonly load 12AX7s with 100K plate resistance), the 12BZ7 can work quite well (there's enough "plate load" to keep things in check). In the amp cited (by the schematic in this thread), it looks like the 12AX7 is loaded 'lightly" (470K). 12BZ7 will draw more current, If you have used 12AT7's in place of the 12AX7s in those (100K plate resistors), and they worked better, IME, than the 12AX7's, the 12BZ7's with higher gain would also work great! One section of a 12BZ7 is like a pair of 12AX7 sections strapped together. This yields half the plate resistance, twice the gm, but the same mu. For the same voltage on the grid (as compared to the cathode), you'll get twice the plate current As a 12BZ7 triode is like two 12AX7 triodes strapped in parallel, for a given input voltage on the grid, there will be twice as much cathode and plate current with a 12BZ7 triode than a single 12AX7 triode. If the sub doesn't work, look at the plate resistor and the cathode resistor values. Add in parallel a second resistor of equal resistance on the existing cathode resistor, and in parallel a second resistor of equal resistance on the plate resistor. You then should see about the same cathode and plate voltages you had with the 12AX7's on the 12BZ7.
