    Description

Mid century 1940s chromium plated steel serving dish from West Bend USA designed to insulate both hot and cold foods and to keep ice cubes chilled. A brochure that came with the item originally recommended using it to serve spaghetti, soup, stew, fried oysters and baked beans, among other things. The round insulated bowl has a lid with a walnut knob and flipper shaped walnut wooden side handles. The centre of the sphere has a decorative band of penguins waddling one behind the other. Has a 2 quart or almost 2 litre capacity. This container was a popular home entertainment item post WWII and one is even on display in the new Museum of the American Cocktail in New Orleans. This one is in good vintage shape but does have a small chip in the outer bottom curve which is not visible when in use and does not affect the storage of the inner section and some scratching on the top lid when viewed closely. It also appears to have some burn marks on the bottom after likely being set on a hot stove element. A great addition to your mid-century modern decor, man cave, bar..... Shipping extra.
