In his early twenties he emigrated to the Boston States, where he would spend most of his career as a gentleman scholar writing about the experience of pre-loyalist and loyalist settlers in Nova Scotia. His magnum opus (this book), The History of Kings County, Nova Scotia (1910), towers above all other similar works. His contribution to the historiography of colonial Nova Scotia remains unique and unsurpassed (Barry Cahill).
