River Bourgeois is a small community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in Richmond County on Cape Breton Island. Despite the name, there is an excellent harbour - but no river. Canadian writers and activists, Farley Mowat, and his wife, Claire, have their summer home there. It is historically a Catholic Acadian community with a long history of fishing. The Acadians are the descendants of the 17th-century French colonists who settled in Acadia, a colony of New France in northeastern North America, many of whom are metis, one of the recognized Aboriginal peoples in Canada. For over 10 years, Gervais (Garvie) Samson, interviewed 150 River Bourgeois residents, recorded their stories and songs, collected hundreds of photographs, investigated building sites, and conducted extensive research at archives and museums. The interest, enthusiasm, and pride of the residents have been the catalyst, turning the curiosity of one photograph to the completion of this historical chronicle. The book includes numerous references to the surrounding communities of Arichat, St. Peter's and L'Ardoise, which developed during the same time period. The author's roots are steeped in Acadian history as Samson forefathers arrived in nearby St. Peter's in 1719. In addition to his historical interests, Garvie is a charter member of the Inventors' Society of Nova Scotia and the Dartmouth Non-Profit Housing Society. He served as President of St. Peter's Parish Council and has been a choir member for 20 years. Farley Mowat said, "Any book about River Bourgeois (Cape Breton, N.S.) is bound to be of great interest. This is one of the oldest and most enduring communities in Cape Breton and the present-day inhabitants of it carry with them not only the memories, but the many good, solid attitudes of other times. I am absolutely delighted that Garvie Samson has taken it on himself to write this book and I hope it will get the audience it deserves."
