"The World of Dutch Art" - Renaissance Gallery Catalog

“THE DUTCH WORLD OF PAINTING” is the title of an exhibition catalogue which was published to accompany an art gallery show of the same name which was organized by the VANCOUVER ART GALLERY in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1986. This particular show (and book) highlighted some of the greatest treasures of Dutch art that were lent to the Vancouver gallery by a variety of museums in the Netherlands. The book reflects the organization of the show, and has sections on landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and so on – they are organized under subject headings as well, with sections dealing with medical themes, commerce, scholarship, religion, and so on. Much material from the “Golden Age” of the Dutch Renaissance, but also but also objects and works from the 19th century. There were 97 items on display, and each of them is illustrated here in either a B & W photo, or a full colour image, as well as a detailed write up from the editor/curator that pits the painting into its historic, artistic, and cultural context.

There is also an excellent introduction & chronology from the editors/ curators, which gives a background to the show, and puts it all into historical and artistic context. A great exhibit, and a useful catalog for anyone interested in Dutch art and artists, Renaissance history and art, and so on. It is also an excellent reference resource, as these items were only seen together once, after which they were packed back into the gallery’s storage warehouse, or returned to the other galleries that had lent their works.

The book was published in Vancouver 1986, and it is 168 pages long. The book is a softcover, and is large format, measuring about 12 x 9 inches. The book is used, but is in pretty much mint condition, with no writing, no stains or soiling, no missing or torn pages and a tight spine and clean cover. This would make a great addition to your collection, or a super gift.
