Description

Rare Book: Pseudodoxia Epidemica, 1650 “Pseudodoxia Epidemica or Enquiries Into Very Many Received Tenents, and Commonly Presumed Truths. By Thomas Browne Dr of Physick. The Second Edition, Corrected and much Enlarged by the Author, Together with some Marginal Observations, and a Table Alphabeticall at the End. London, Printed by A. Miller, for Edw. Dod and Nath. Ekins, at the Gunne in Ivie Lane, 1650.” This 356-page book is an historical rarity, being the first treatise published in the English language that tried to deal scientifically with the debunking of wives’ tales, myths and legends commonly held to be true at that time. For example, that salamanders are born in fire! The author, Sir Thomas Browne, is a significant historical figure; the personal physician to King Charles II and founder of the London School of Anatomy. This is an example of the Emblem book style, printed on linen paper; roughly 7” wide by 11” high. The front and back covers are missing but the spine and all the sewn folio sections are intact. No missing pages. Much worn but all easily readable. The book has been kept in a controlled environment for the past 35 years. Anyone interested in the history of printed books, the history of published science dealing with myth, legend, old wives’ tales or Western medicine would find this a superb and highly entertaining read. A 364-year-old book is a significant historical document - Price: $200 firm; sorry, no trades - Location: Hamilton, Ontario
