"Stops" to aid A-arm bushing function.
Suspension of Disbelief, Part 1.a. (part of a series of explanatory articles so named at the S2Forum.com).
1.) This ad is for a set of four appropriately sized plastic "Stops" or thrust-washers. They are as large as the bush flange's OD. Four are required per "axle" of vehicle (i.e. two per corner of vehicle).
2.) Their purpose is 4-fold as follows: a) to increase the service life of the bushings; b) to ensure more accurate and durable suspension alignment settings; c) to promote increased tire tread life; &. d) to provide improved steering feel to the driver.
3.) "Stops" (1st photo shows a single "Stop"-washer) are made from a most suitable tough semi-crystalline plastic that is as rigid, durable, and low-friction as can be found at this price and does not absorb water which might otherwise degrade it's mechanical properties.
4.) "Stops" are to be installed against the flanged outboard faces of only new genuine Boge/Sachs bushings (2nd photo), after the bushings have been installed and before the A-arms have been re-attached onto the sub-frame. You can read more about "Stops" here:
5.) "Stops" are available in two differently sized versions as follows:
a) The larger one applies to vehicles which use the larger bushings (45mm OD main body behind flange) OEM P/N 893 407 181 in the forged front type A-arms such as:
i) Audi type B4 80, 90, 90S, 90CS Quattro & Cabriolet, S2 & RS2 from 1990 through 1998; & ii) They can also be used on vehicles which have been or are being converted to this bushing type by switching to the forged arms, such as Audi type B2 & B3 80/90 1984 through 1987 and 1988 through 1992 Sedan and Coupe Quattro.
b) The smaller version thrust-washers can be provided for use with the smaller Boge/Sachs (35mm OD main body behind flange) OEM P/N 8A0 407 181 type bushings originally used in the stamped A-arms such as:
i) Audi type B2 and B3 80, 90, Quattro; & ii) The Volkswagen Passat, Santana & Quantum Syncro Wagon that use OEM P/N 857 407 181 type bushings originally.
6.) Please note some few A-arms require one of each bushing diameter (one large & one small). Customer needs to check, measure and specify what sizes are required.
7.) For scale, the 3rd photo shows a single "Stop" balanced on top of the Boge bushing's flanged face where the washer is to be placed around the bushing's metal core, prior to the A-arm's re-attachment to the sub-frame; where it will now be held firmly centered between the "Stops".
8.) Fall-back: Installation is entirely reversible. Product is an add-on; and as no actual permanent physical changes to any part of the car are required to effect their installation, they can be easily removed (stock conditions are thus restored) without bushing removal from A-arm.
