Wanted: Volunteers to test Audi 90* product to aid front strut-mounts.
Subject: This is about a mod which may postpone strut top-mount failure indefinitely. In Independent testing for over three years in several countries, it has prevented the typical vertical collapse of OEM mounts in all cases.
Part 2.a. of "Suspension of Disbelief", (from a series of explanatory articles so named at the online S2 Forum, UK).
Aim: Seeking participants for pre-production test of a suspension mount aid which aims to preserve the stock mount's "as new" function and lengthen its life-span. Two of the maker's aims in this test are to:
a) Quickly accumulate kilometers; & b) Gather independent feed-back.
In return for their efforts, participants will be offered product at a reduced cost (half price: $30.00 Cdn.); and until the end of December 2018, the maker will pay shipping to their location.
*Application: - Audi B-Series 1, 2, 3 & 4, both FWD & Quattro, Type 81/85/89/8C, 4000, UrQ, 80, 90, Coupe, Cab., S2, & RS2 models (1973 > 1996); & - VW B-Series Passat, Carat, Corsar, Dasher, Santana & Quantum Syncro Wagon models (1973 > 1988) that can use the below listed mount. - Subject front type strut-mount also found in the rear of some models.
Use: Product design intent is to fit & augment strictly the correct OEM Boge/Sachs front strut top-mount which has "BOGE" and the following P/N cast into the lower rubber section (visible up-side down in bottom left of 1st photo):
8A0 412 355A
Installation: Product test kit components are to be installed into strictly new mounts during normal, as per factory, mount replacement procedure. Product is installed into the top cavity of the mount (shown installed in top right of 1st photo).
Test Kit Contents (2nd photo): Product consists of ten non-VAG items to equip two mounts (damper shaft top nuts in 2nd photo are not included, but are shown for scale), however please note these parts are not sufficient to complete the necessary installation. Participants are required to supply two of the above listed Boge/Sachs strut top-mounts, which must be brand new and as yet un-installed; also likely alternate VAG cupped-washers (depending on chassis specifics); and some other minor items.
Operation: Product is only a modification (or a "mod") in that they alter how the mounts operate. They add resistance, resilience and an internal travel-limiting stop to vertical mount function which together; net other benefits.
Fall-back: Installation is entirely reversible. Product is an add-on; and as no actual permanent physical changes to any part of the car are required to effect their installation, they can be easily removed (stock conditions are thus restored) without strut dis-assembly.
Who this may interest: Your suspension may not be entirely stock, but your goal is something adult oriented; and you value calm, quiet and some vestige of comfort. You also recognize the possible value in the core aspects and potential up-side to this product if successful to be as follows: a) That this product will -not- likely improve comfort noticeably over what brand new mounts alone may briefly offer, nor is that its' intent, but instead aims to preserve the integrity, utility and quiet function of new mounts; in that condition, much longer term; b) You have grasped through experience or aptitude that there are, beyond the obvious cost and maintenance advantages, other dependent driving characteristics well worth keeping mounts in their best possible condition for; & c) That the above possibility makes a shot at achieving such, worth a try.
Availability: Maker would like to distribute a very few test kits beginning in July 2016.
