Well, after another long, cold Winter, Spring has finally arrived and the tree swallows will soon be on their way home.
These nesting boxes have been designed specifically for tree swallows. They are great little song birds that migrate thousands of KM each year, returning home to nest with us and raise their young. Each adult can consume many hundreds of insects a day.
Nesting boxes sold in retail stores are almost always too small and since female tree swallows can laid between 4 and 7 eggs, an under-sized and over-crowded nesting box can cause baby swallows (nestlings) to die. Tree swallow numbers have been declining for more than 20 years; one of the reasons being a lack of available nesting sites.
Each box is hand-built here in Nova Scotia, Canada, using all natural, western red cedar, which is safe for birds and is well known to last for many years. Its dimensions were recommended by a very knowledgeable tree swallow hobbyist based in New York State, who has studied tree swallows for 40 + years.
Though I've received many compliments on the design of the nesting box with the gable roof; my intention was to provide protection for the entrance hole from wind and rain coming from the sides as well as above. The pointed roof also makes it more difficult for predators such as cats and raccoons to easily reach the opening. Comes with side door that opens for cleaning/inspection and entrance hole sized for tree swallows. Box style with flat roof has removable top. Introductory price of $50. Canadian firm. Pick up can be arranged near the Kentville area. Shipping available for extra charge. Have shipped as far west as Oregon & Alberta, east to Virginia & New Brunswick and as far south as Texas.
