1972 TRAYNOR CERWIN VEGA YCV-212 SPEAKER CABINETS
Up for sale is a remarkable pair of 1972 Traynor YCV-212 custom restored cabinets. These speakers cosmetically and mechanically speak for themselves. Here I have tried to write as much as I can about the Traynors.....
There is alot to speak of these cabinets, and theres nothing worse than having to read the longest kijiji description…I know! But these speakers need one. They sound excellent and they look like nothing else! I saw an ad on kijiji years back and bought the unloaded cabinets a few years ago from a local gentleman who reluctantly wanted to sell them. You just dont see these cabinets with the Traynor design and Cerwin Vega sound come up too often. They were in great shape for their age but like any other 40+ year old cabinets they had their nicks and dings in the Tolex and there were no speakers inside them. They were probably used by a few bands over the years and I wanted to make them look good as new again with a custom twist. So now in my hands, I painstakingly stripped the Tolex off the sides and top, inch by inch, with a heat gun and a scraper, for both cabs..let me say this was not done overnight! Next, I sanded the sides and tops in multiple stages filled any small imperfections with a matching colour woodfiller. The quality and grain of the wood(at least 3/4” plywood) after tolex removed and sanding was finished is by far better than most cabinets put out in this day and age. Finally, after all sanded sides were cleaned of any debris, a total of 2 coats of a Cabernet stain were applied and a total of 2 coats of gloss varathane applied. There was a lot of time, attention and care in between each coat of stain and verethane. With the sides and tops of the cabinets finished, I replaced the beat up chrome trim on each cabinet. And the final step…I popped in 2x12” Cerwin Vega 122EB woofers and replaced the 40+yr old wiring in each cab! The four 122EB’s have all orginal cones and are in excellent condition, plenty of bass. There has been a lot of work, time, and materials put in to these cabinets to make them look and sound as good as they did in 1972. I hope someone will take care of them, use them and appreciate them as much as I have. Now, as much as I hate to part with these, I have a pair of Cerwin Vega 189SW’s and that’s more than enough bass in a basement. Need to make some room, but not in a hurry to sell the Traynors.
