Cerwin-Vega AT-8 Loudspeakers, all-black oak-grain. $160 OBO
For sale - a pair of vintage Cerwin Vega AT-8 speakers from the very late 1980's, in black oak-grain vinyl covering.
The woofer foam surrounds were replaced in the last 3 months (in grey, I'm not nuts about the red-ring look), so they are good for another 20 years or so. These higher-compliance/less stiff surrounds have actually improved the bass, permitting it to go deeper than the originals.
Acoustically, these speakers are in perfect condition. The cabinets are about 9.5/10 condition - some scuff marks and very minor corner dings on the bottoms, but in excellent shape considering they are almost 30 years old.
These have ducted-port cabinets to extend the bass frequencies. The port fires to the rear, so placing them about 6" from a wall should provide even more bass (they should not be placed right against the wall).
Really vigorous and efficient, these would be great for all kinds of music, though I suspect they will really shine on heavier rock music. I have been listening to a wide range of music on these, and they seem to do everything very well. Solo piano music and jazz are very nuanced, with both a great bottom for low piano notes and string bass, combined with great "air" and texture for things like vocals and jazz snare and cymbals thanks to the very clean tweeters. Heavier/bassy music takes advantage of the sheer power of that oversized woofer magnet to produce plenty of drive. The lower end goes very low thanks to the rear port.
I have found these to be surprisingly well-rounded and articulate speakers, particularly as they come from a maker I usually associate with targeting to a rock and metal/party music customer base.
The woofers are incredible things - cast aluminum frames, with really huge magnets. I've never seen 8" woofers built to this spec. They provide plenty of low bass, again in this case thanks to the higher-compliance replacement surrounds which are not quite as stiff as the originals, and therefore allow the woofer to "breathe" a bit better into the lower octaves.
Each speaker cabinet is surprisingly heavy, very robustly built using thick materials, considering these are bookshelf speakers (though at the larger end of bookshelf). Dimensions are: 21"H x 12"W x 10.5"D.
Unless you've got really strong shelves or a cabinet to stand them on, these might do best on low stands.
The first 3 pictures are of the speakers themselves. The 4th and 5th pictures are of the same kind of woofer used in these cabinets, but I found those pictures online.
