1988 TV with an antenna should still be able to receive some over-the-air (OTA) channels, as long as you're in an area with good signal reception and the TV is equipped with a digital converter box.
Canada switched to digital broadcasting in 2011, so if your 1988 TV is analog, you'll need a digital converter box to pick up digital OTA signals. Once you have that set up, you should be able to pick up channels like CBC, CTV, and Global, as well as some other local channels, depending on your location.
