60's Vintage Florida USA STM (Refaced By Marantz) 7*
I bought this mouthpiece about a year ago from my saxophone tech. It was the best mouthpiece I had ever played! Dark, Fat, Focused with a little sizzle. It came with the Original mp cap and the original ligature. It measured a .98 tip opening ( 6* ). I decided to send this mouthpiece off to the great Matt Marantz to have it refaced & opened up to a 7* back in October of 2019. During the two months that my mouthpiece was with Matt, I played on an early babbit STM that was signiifcantly brighter, clearer and edgier. The tone grew on me... I finally got my STM back from Matt Marantz mid December 2019, and I had two thoughts about my newly refaced STM 1.) - Best damn mouthpiece I had ever played, I had no Idea my vintage link could become so much easier to play - Extremely free blowing, extremely resonant, altissimo was a dream, more projection, even more focused! and the tone was smoother, fatter, warmer and more velvety than before. I had no words to explain what a joy it was to play. 2.) Sadly the tone just wasn't for me any more... During my time with the early babbit piece I came to realize that I'm at home with a brighter clearer tone (Coltrane is my sound concept) Once I played this mouthpiece, and experienced first hand just what a magician Matt Marantz is with mouthpieces, I immediately purchased his Double Ring Legacy (It's a clone of a Florida Double ring) After speaking with him, he explained that his Double Ring plays nearly identical to my re-faced link, only its Brighter & Edgier! I was sold! Truth be told, I would love to keep my STM, just incase I ever decide I'd like a warmer, darker, velvetier tone. Sadly it's not in the budget. It's hard for me to sell such a masterpiece... but I'm hoping the right musician gets there hand on this, as it's truly one of a kind! This mouthpiece really sings for an Ottolink, & if your after a dark, focused, warm, velvety tone (Think Joe Henderson vs Stan gets vs Dexter Gordon) You will never come across a better mouthpiece period. I've included a video clip of Matt Marantz play testing my STM right after he finished his refacing work. He sent me this clip to show me how incredible it turned out right before shipping it back to me. - He is a much stronger player than I am & He does a better job showing off just what this link is capable of. Thank you for your interst.
